PHOENIX (2019) written for Collide Trio
(mixed piano trio: alto saxophone, cello & piano)
Written for and dedicated to Collide (Alto Sax: Joseph Lallo, Cello: Yelian He and Piano: Yasmin Rowe).
PHOENIX is a work centred on the continual process/cycle of dedication, exhaustion, re-motivation, and in turn re-incarnation. The instrumentation consists of alto saxophone, cello, and piano, utilising minimalist piano gestures and hemiolas with dovetailed and antiphonal phrases across the saxophone and cello.
The piece has deep personal meaning, functioning as the embodiment and catharsis of my own hard work, soul-searching and adversities across my 2018 year. acts as a reminder to always realise that contained ‘burning out’ phases in every journey are crucial, and that the moment of becoming ‘hopeful again’ should never cease. We always end up at our beginnings, yet somehow more complex and grounded from the experiences and memories we gather alone and shared along the way. We are ‘reborn’ each time – the very same, yet very different

PHOENIX received its world premiere by Collide Trio in "Phoenix" at Hanson-Dyer Hall 10/05/2022, as part of the Hanson-Dyer Hall Series.
It has since received subsequent performances at the Melbourne Recital Centre (2024 3MBS Marathon), Astolat Gardens and Monash University’s MPAC across 2024.

Monash University Performing Arts Centres presented Collide as part of the Sundays in the Sound Gallery series.
This recital was part of the 2024 Sundays in the Sound Gallery series, showcasing exceptional artists in the intimate and acoustically superb David Li Sound Gallery.

‘PHOENIX’ performed by Collide, as part of the 2024 3MBS Marathon held at the Melbourne Recital Centre 24/02/2024, curated by Wilma Smith. One of three Australian works performed across the Marathon, alongside Cawrse and Wyatt.

3MBS Made in Melbourne Launch and Patron Soiree at Astolat estate and gardens in Camberwell, with PHOENIX performed privately by Collide for invited VIP patrons.
